Symptoms like: weight gain, mood swings, fatigue, memory loss, low sex drive, thinning hair, depression, anxiety, muscle loss, hot flashes can all be linked to hormone imbalances. Beginning in our 30's hormone levels in our bodies are already declining. Stress, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise and toxins in our environment can all contribute to hormonal imbalances in the body.
There are numerous viewpoints on bioidenticals and at Desert Holistic Health we want to make sure your questions are answered by offering the following.
Q: I’ve heard hormones replacement can contribute to the riskof cancer, is this true?
There was a popular study that showed a link between hormone replacement however there were a few problems with the study. If you follow Dr. John Lee’s three rules there is actually a decreased risk of breast cancer, heart attacks and strokes. The three rules are:
♦ Give hormones to only those who are truly deficient in hormones,
♦ Use bioidentical hormones vs synthetic,
♦ Give the lowest dose to provide normal levels in the body.
Q: What is the difference between bioidentical hormones and synthetic hormones?
Synthetic hormones (such as Premarin which is made from horse urine) have a different molecular configuration than the hormones in our bodies. Bioidentical hormones (which are made from plant-derived molecules such as yams and plant-life) have a similar molecular configuration so our bodies see them as the same as our own, therefore they are more easily assimilated.
Q: Are bioidentical hormones expensive?
Most people find the bioidenticals more cost effective than prescription synthetic hormones they purchase at the drug store. Bioidenticals are compounded based on your current labs. Usually a one month prescription is $50 and there are discounts for a three month supply. Many offices will order bioidentical hormones for you from the compounding pharmacy then charge you double the price.
At Desert Holistic Health you pay the pharmacy directly, we do not mark up the price of your prescription. From discussions with our patients they report saving money using bioidenticals when switching from synthetic hormones.
Q: What are the benefits of hormone replacement for men?
Men obviously have different symptoms from women, but can benefit from hormone replacement as well. Low libido, difficulty maintaining an erection, fatigue, difficulty achieving muscle mass, or difficulties losing weight are all symptoms of low testosterone. We recommend testosterone injections, often with a combination of HCG to stimulate the body’s own testosterone production. Other options are available as well such as testosterone cream.
Q: Why choose Desert Holistic Health for your hormone replacement needs?
Megan is experienced and knowledgeable about prescribing bioidentical hormone replacement therapies. Most health practitioners receive very little instruction in hormone replacement during their schooling and internships. Megan sought out additional training and mentoring after her schooling to understand what questions had not been answered by her formal education. She has countless patients with stories who continued to suffer with symptoms while being treated with synthetic hormones by other providers. She is still surprised at how often providers fail to order current labs to check hormone levels and continue to prescribe synthetic hormone replacements while the patient continues to have symptoms.
Megan’s successes with her patients have enabled her to help people achieve their goals while keeping your best interest at heart. She knows that no two people are the same and each person needs a specific plan that will address their needs. Megan will work with you to come up with the best plan to help you achieve your goals.
If you are on a synthetic program or are interested in learning about bioidenticals, please schedule an appointment for a simple consultation and lab test to confirm if your symptoms are caused by hormone imbalance. We have plenty of experience with hormone replacement and can answer any questions/concerns you may have. As with any medical program not everyone is a candidate and results may vary.
